CCEM is a McMaster University Research Institute and Center (RCI) and Core Research Platform (CRP), reporting to McMaster University’s Office of VPR. CCEM’s Governing Board has overall responsibility for the governance and management of CCEM, on behalf of the University.
Executive Committee: Make decisions pertaining to instruments of governance and in-year performance of CCEM between meetings of the Governing Board.
International Scientific Advisory Committee: Provide scientific advice to the Scientific Direction and to the Governing Board with respect to CCEM’s ambition to be an internationally recognized Centre of Excellence in electron and ion microscopy.
Management Committee: Serves as a formal structure to make decisions on management and operations of CCEM, and inform and get feedback from stakeholders of the host institution.

Our Strategic Plan provides a bold vision for CCEM as a national research facility. It has been informed by feedback from the national user community, partners and CCEM management and builds on the successes and lessons from our previous Plan. The Governing Board has actively participated in shaping the plan. The strategic goals of CCEM over the next five years will strengthen CCEM’s position as a national electron microscopy research facility with international recognition for excellence that serves a growing and diverse national academic and industrial user base.

EDI is a priority at CCEM. CCEM believes that a diverse community of stakeholders greatly enhances our impact. CCEM uses an intentional approach to identify EDI priorities and goals. This Framework articulates our ambition and approach to EDI, with the inclusion of accessibility.
As part of the shared understanding of CCEM’s EDI journey, CCEM Management and Staff have developed a team culture statement to inform CCEM’s actions and milestones as outlined in this Framework. The culture statement was built with all Management and Staff, outlining the teams’ values and expectations. All members of CCEM will incorporate the values of the culture statement when interacting with community members.

The Data Management and Cybersecurity Framework, approved by the Governing Board, outlines best practices adopted by CCEM to ensure data and intellectual property are secure and provides guidance for staff and users regarding expectations consistent with the goals of the Strategic Plan. Further, this document codifies the process of data collection, processing, storage, documentation, backup, the types of data, roles and responsibilities of CCEM users and Management, data ownership and sharing, and cybersecurity.

The CCEM User Access Policy outlines the terms, responsibilities, and eligibility criteria for users engaging with CCEM’s state-of-the-art equipment, laboratories, and expert services. Fees apply based on facility usage, and all users must adhere to CCEM’s Terms of Use, ensuring responsible and ethical research practices. This policy ensures fair, secure, and efficient access to CCEM’s resources, supporting breakthrough materials research, education, and innovation.

At CCEM, we are dedicated to maintaining a secure and inclusive research environment while upholding the principles of open science. As part of our commitment to research security, we have introduced a User Attestation Statement, which aligns with Canada’s Policy on Sensitive Technology Research and Affiliations of Concern (STRAC). This attestation requires that all CCEM users affirm that their research is in compliance with applicable Canadian and International laws and confirm they have no affiliations with organizations of concern or other sanctioned entities.
