Two CCEM-linked finalists are featured in Science Exposed! Cast your vote today!
We’re proud to share that two incredible images from McMaster University researchers—captured with the help of the Canadian Centre for Electron Microscopy—have been selected as finalists in the NSERC Science Exposed competition, showcasing the beauty of scientific discovery through photography.
“Attack of the Thecamoebians!”
Kaelin Platt, Teagan Warkentin
This scanning electron microscope image shows a thecamoebian—a single-celled protist that builds its protective shell by cementing together surrounding sediment. These freshwater microorganisms are key indicators of environmental change over time.
“Viral Blossoms”
Zeinab Hosseinidoust, Tohid Didar, Lei Tian
These delicate, flower-like structures are made entirely of bacteriophages. They self-assemble when exposed to pressurized carbon dioxide that mimics their natural structures. This breakthrough enabled the team to design a powerful biosensor to detect Legionnaires’ disease in contaminated water.
